Beyond the Pond: 5 Best Day Trips for Families in Western Maine
Let’s be honest: once you pull into Papoose Pond Family Campground, it is very hard to find a reason to leave. Between the Tie-Dye sessions, dips in our heated pool, and those nightly carousel rides that make everyone feel like a kid again, the “Papoose bubble” is a pretty magical place to be. We are basically a full-blown summer camp for families, and we love every second of it!
However, we also know that part of the magic of a family summer vacation in Maine is discovering the hidden gems that make our corner of the world so special. Western Maine camping isn’t just about the s’mores (though those are vital); it’s about the rugged mountains, the crystal-clear swimming holes, and the small-town charm that you can only find here in the Oxford Hills.
If you’re looking to add a little extra adventure to your stay, we’ve rounded up the 5 best day trips for families, all just a short hop from your campsite or rental cabin.
Even Willy is packing his backpack for these local adventures!
1. The “Big Reward” Hike: Hawk Mountain
If you only do one hike while you’re here, make it Hawk Mountain in Waterford. It is the ultimate family-friendly trail. Why? Because the effort-to-reward ratio is off the charts.
The trail is a gentle 0.7-mile walk to the summit (about 1.4 miles round trip). It’s perfect for little legs that might tire out on longer climbs, but the views from the top will take even a teenager’s breath away. From the open ledges, you get a panoramic, southerly view of the Lakes Region and the mountains beyond.
Pro Tip: Pack a picnic! There’s a wonderful flat clearing at the top with a fire pit that’s made for a mid-day snack break. You can find maps and more details on the Maine Trail Finder website.
2. Local Flavor in Norway and Bethel
When you’re looking for things to do in Western Maine that involve a little less “nature” and a little more “treats,” head to the nearby towns of Norway and Bethel.
- Norway: Take a stroll down Main Street. It has that classic New England feel with local bookstores, cafes, and quirky shops. It’s a great place to grab an ice cream and just wander.
- Bethel: Bethel is home to the Sunday River. While most popular for skiing in the winter, there are so many day trip things to do in the summer months, including going on a hike or riding up their Chondola (opens July 3).
3. Bowling at Stars and Strikes: South Paris, ME
Who doesn’t love a good bowling day? The perfect place for a rainy afternoon, or just looking for something fun to do with the whole family, our local bowling alley has become a favorite spot for our campers looking to spend a day outside of the campground.
4. Cooling Off: Frenchman’s Hole & Cascade Gorge
If the pond is calling but you want a change of scenery, Western Maine is famous for its natural swimming holes.
- Frenchman’s Hole: Located near Bethel, this is a local legend. It’s a deep, cold, mountain-fed pool with a waterfall. While the main jump is for the brave-hearted, there are plenty of shallow spots for wading and exploring the rocks.
- Cascade Stream Gorge: For something a bit gentler, this 1-mile loop trail features a series of beautiful waterfalls and cascades. It’s shaded, cool, and perfect for a hot July afternoon.
5. The Nostalgia Trip: Bridgton Twin Drive-In
Looking for something to do after the sun goes down? Head over to Bridgton for a night at the Bridgton Twin Drive-In. In an era where drive-in theaters are disappearing, this one is thriving and is a total throwback to simpler times.
Load up the car with pillows and blankets, grab some popcorn from the concession stand, and enjoy a double feature under the Maine stars. It’s the perfect way to cap off a day of exploring.
At a Glance: Day Trip Checklist
Before you head out of the campground, make sure you have:
- Water bottles (Hiking is thirsty work!)
- Sturdy sneakers (Flip-flops are for the beach, not Hawk Mountain)
- Sunscreen and Bug Spray (The Maine woods are beautiful, but the bugs like us too!)
- A physical map or downloaded directions (Cell service can be “adventurous” out here!)
Why We Love Our “Neighborhood”
While we pride ourselves on having the best activities list in the state, we know that the memories you make exploring the local area are just as important as the ones you make here on the beach. Western Maine has a soul that is rugged, beautiful, and incredibly welcoming to families.
Whether you’re touching a meteorite in Bethel or picking the perfect blueberry in Sweden, these day trips add that extra layer of “Maineness” to your vacation. We’ve even put together a full Area Attractions page to help you find even more hidden spots!
Pro Tip: If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the options, just ask one of our activities counselors or stop by the office. Many of our staff have grown up right here in Waterford and Norway, and they love sharing their favorite “secret” spots with our guests.
Ready to Explore?
The truth is simple: Papoose Pond fills fast, and so do the summer days. Give your family something to look forward to by planning a few “off-campus” adventures this year. You’ll return to your campfire at night with tired feet, full bellies, and a camera roll full of memories.
See you at the Pond (and beyond!)
